On Monday October 17, 2016 Geospatial Niagara had the opportunity to make a presentation to the Town of Pelham Council regarding the treeOcode Niagara project. We wanted to take the opportunity to promote the project as well as to encourage the municipality to become members of treeOcode Niagara.
treeOcode is a community engagement/education initiative to crowd-source information about Niagara’s Urban Forest Canopy using the OpenTreeMap SaaS created by Azavea . You can visit the treeOcode map here.
As noted in the graphic to the left, trees play an invaluable role in not only our community but also to the urban wildlife community.
Based on the species and the diameter of the tree, the eco-benefits of that tree can be calculated. These parameters include energy conserved, storm water mitigated, the amount of particulate matter removed from the atmosphere as well as the amount of CO2 removed and sequestered.
This is an excellent project to promote the value and impact of the green infrastructure as well as promoting careers in geography, the environment, geospatial technologies and arboriculture.
The presentation can be viewed on the Town of Pelham’s Youtube Channel. Beginning near the 34 minute mark.
