I’ve recently begun experimenting with CartoDB and thought I would share this visualization with everyone.
Beginning on May 8, 2015, Canadian rock icons RUSH hit the road on their R40 Tour. There has been much discussion about whether this is the last major tour that the band will undertake. As much as my heart breaks at that notion, I thought that this upcoming tour might be a great chance to visualize some geospatial data.
The website Cygnus X-1.net provides a veritable ton of information about Rush including a comprehensive list of tour dates all the way from their coffee shop and high school shows in 1968 up until their final R40 date on August 1, 2015. This information includes: the date, location, venue, opening bands and a link with photos if applicable.
I chose to display this data as a dynamic heat map. CartoDB is a very user friendly platform that takes any number of data types (shapefiles, csv etc) and allows you to visualize in minutes. Check out the CartoDB YouTube Channel for tips, tricks and tutorials.
Feel free to zoom in to the map and take a look around. There are 2221 data points.
For those curious the number of shows breaks down like this…
There have been 1620 shows in the United States, 402 in Canada, 96 in the UK, 37 in Germany, 17 in Scotland, 10 in The Netherlands, 8 in Sweden, 5 in Brazil, 4 in Japan, 3 shows each in Finland, France and Wales, 2 each Belgium, Italy and Norway and single shows in Argentina, Chile, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Switzerland.
