A group of Niagara-involved stakeholders is backing a volunteer-led initiative to use a crowd-sourcing approach to building and sustaining a comprehensive Tree Inventory across the entire Niagara Region, using smartphone apps feeding an open spatial database.
Please see a brief overview here.
If you are interested in getting involved in some capacity, here are the volunteer positions we are seeking to fill:
- Regional Stewards (by lower tier municipality). Responsible for recruiting, training and organising a group of volunteer tree data collectors using smartphone apps, to go out before Labour Day, to collect the basic information we are seeking to compile.
- Tree Inventory Data Collection Volunteers. You would enjoy outdoor projects that conserve and sustain our environment, particularly the retention and nurturing of a healthy tree canopy, that contributes so much to the quality of life in our Niagara Peninsula.
- Data analytics specialists with a geospatial focus, to build new database apps that extract value for all of our stakeholders, for their specific objectives. Applications might include disease understanding and mitigation; revival of indigenous tree species; protection and conservation; replacement programs and so much more.
