On Wednesday, November 2, 2016, Geospatial Niagara had the privilege of participating in the District School Board of Niagara‘s – Parent Involvement Conference.
The Parent Involvement Conference is organized by the Parent Involvement Committee which is an advisory board between the parents of DSBN students and the school board. Each school in the DSBN whether primary or secondary, has a parent committee that is involved in the local school and community. This can be through fundraising or other community involvement. The Parent Involvement Committee operates at the board level and directs its energy on events and other things that affect more than one school.
The conference is an annual event where education services come together to promote their products and programs to representatives of each schools parent councils. These services run the gamut of school photos, extracurricular activities, educational services (tutoring) etc. Each conference also has presentations delivered by experts in their fields and cover topics such as mental health, learning strategies, parenting in a digital age and many more.
Over the course of the evening, we engaged with over 60 parent representatives from 25 schools across Niagara. This is the second year that Geospatial Niagara has participated where we promote geographic education and geospatial technologies and encourage the parent committee members to take back our message to their schools so that we may be able to engage the staff and students in the importance of geo-literacy. We provide a number of resources for students, teachers and parents under the Education tab on the Geospatial Niagara website. There we have Resources and Municipal Links.
We are looking forward to bringing the Geospatial Niagara message to students and parents across the school board and with our continued partnership with DSBN’s iHub.
